Silicone sealant is an indispensable caulking material in renovation projects. It can effectively waterproof, bond and seal. However, there are tricks to using silicone sealant correctly, requiring attention to all aspects including selection, application and daily maintenance. The following article explains in detail the correct usage of silicone sealant.

Choosing Silicone Sealant
Types of Silicone Sealant

Silicone sealant is mainly divided into neutral cure silicone and acetic cure silicone.

Neutral cure silicone has a wider range of applications and is relatively high quality, but the price is slightly higher;

Acetic cure silicone is inexpensive, but has corrosive properties and is prone to mildew. Choose according to actual needs.

Drying Time for Silicone Sealant

The surface drying time for silicone sealant is approximately 2 hours
The full cure time for neutral cure silicone sealant is approximately 48 hours, while for acetic cure silicone sealant it is approximately 24 hours
In some more extreme environments with higher humidity or lower temperatures, the full cure time may need to reach 2-3 days

Precautions When Using Silicone Sealant

Preparation: Ensure the surface to be sealed is clean and dry. Any dust, dirt or moisture will affect the adhesive strength and curing of the silicone sealant.
Safety: Wear gloves and goggles when applying silicone sealant. Ensure the working area is well-ventilated as some silicone sealants release harmful gases.
Cleanup: If silicone sealant gets onto unwanted areas, clean immediately before it cures. Commercial silicone sealant cleaners or alcohol can be used for cleaning.
